Drew

In 2018 we start a new round of Athlete Features. As we did in 2017 we want to introduce and discuss all kinds of Professions and how a solid fitness routine impacts driving great results in your career and at home. We are so fortunate to work and work out with friends with all sorts of interesting tidbits of advice to offer after years of experience. Drew is no different. As a police officer and the “breacher” on his SWAT team, Drew has to carry a premium level of fitness in order to execute his job efficiently and safely. Gone are the days where donuts and coffee fuel our public servants with Drew as a shining example. A family man, good friend and fitness obsessed brother, Drew delivers some great advice from his many years of experience.

Give us a little background about yourself…

I grew up in Golden, Colorado and attended GHS in the 90’s, where I played football and ran track. Going into my senior year I was one of 7 blue chip recruits from Colorado.  Unfortunately I had a severe injury going into my senior year and later earned a scholarship for track while playing football and running track. Ileft CSU in 2001 with a degree in Business Administration and a successful student-athlete.  After college, I helped start and supplement company that is still in existence today.  I currently live in Thornton with my wife and two young boys, while working for a great organization.  

What is your profession? 

A full time father and husband, while working as a police officer to pay the bills. 
 

What do you do to stay fit?

High intensity workouts with a good amount of weight training.  I am currently training for the ultra spartan beast (23+ mile / 55+ obstacle trail run) so I have been trying to balance it all.   
 
I try to fit in one swimming workout, one long distance run one and climb the stairs once a. week . In between all of that I throw around weight as frequently as I can and most importantly, I force myself to take A rest day to physically and mentally heal. 
 

What does fitness mean in your profession?

It’s huge.  Not only do I need to stay fit to chase bad guys.  But I have to be strong to break down doors.  I have been a SWAT operator for over 10 years and my primary responsibility has been the “Breacher” (forcing doors open).  So I need to be fast and strong to get that entry point open, allowing a safe approach for the other operators  

Do you eat a certain way or follow a particular nutrition plan?

Just don’t eat that junk.   I just try to eat healthy.   I mainly focus on a more high protein diet with low carbs.  I haven’t had a soda in over 7 years and I am not a huge fan of bread.   I find preparing your meals a head of time is a great way to stay on task and remain focused.     

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy spending time with the family.   I recently discovered a new found interest in reading, and of course who doesn’t enjoy sitting on their ass as a hobby.    

Any advice you want to share with others? 

Be true to yourself and be you.    Exercise is my number one key to limiting stress.   The longer the workout and the more weight I throw around, the better I feel.   It helps clear my mind while releasing the endorphins that help me relax and clear my mind.    Everyone needs to find their own way to limit that stress while making sure you prioritize that into your daily activities. 
In any profession, Mental health is a huge part of being successful.  
Play multiple sports, learn new games, set goals, chase dreams and laugh. 

Did you play sports as a kid and did you have an influential coach or mentor that has stayed with you?

 
I played all shorts of sports growing up.   But I didn’t start playing football or running track until high school.  That’s were I fell in love with athletics.  I will always have the respect for the team game while surrounding my family within the environment if they chose.  
 
I wish the high intensity / sport specific  training was available in my youth as I believe this has changed the game and development of todays athlete.    

Closing Remarks

One of the elements of success that Drew drives home is making healthy practices a lifestyle. He lives and breathes how fitness and good nutrition drives safety and results in his profession and in his ability to play with his boys. Fitness doesn’t have to take hours and nutrition doesn’t have to be limiting. Start small. 20-30 minutes a day of activity and maybe try to eliminate a complex grain from your diet. The key is forming a habit that becomes a part of your lifestyle.
